Knoxville's oldest performance space opened in 1909 as an addition to the Lamar House Hotel and has hosted the Marx Brothers, John Philip Sousa and Dizzy Gillespie. After decades of decline it was rescued by citizens in 1974 and restored again in the 2000s. Today the roughly 700-seat room books songwriters, comedians and touring bands at close range.
